Heim, Payne & Chorush Helps Patent Owner Win Key Ruling Against Samsung in Wireless Communications Infringement Lawsuit

Heim, Payne & Chorush’s Michael Heim, Chris Limbacher, Eric Enger, and Wills Collier recently helped firm client Four Batons Wireless LLC overcome a series of legal challenges filed by communications giant Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in four inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The decision issued on July 17 by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) covers four crucial wireless communication patents that are the subject of Four Batons’ claims against Samsung in the underlying lawsuit, which is scheduled for trial early next year.

The HPC team defeated Samsung’s request for a trial before the PTAB to challenge the validity of Four Batons’ U.S. Patent Nos. 7,502,348 B2; 8,073,436 B2; 8,239,671 B2; and 8,798,006 B2, which broadly cover technology including mobile device handoffs between networks, real-time assessment of network interface quality, and secure authentication of wireless devices.

The ruling from the Washington, D.C.-based PTAB clears the way for Four Batons’ evidence against Samsung to be presented during a jury trial that is scheduled for February 2026 before Judge Rodney Gilstrap in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Marshall.
